Betty J. Hall Sowers, 98, formerly of Linesville, passed away peacefully on Friday, April 20, 2018, in Dublin, Ohio.
Born February 25, 1920, in Pierpont, Ohio, she was the daughter of Lynn and Florence Holt Hall.
Betty was a graduate of Pierpont High School in 1937 and Andover High School in 1938 and was class valedictorian at each.
She married Glenavon Marcy in 1941; he was killed in 1944 in an accident on their farm. After Glenavon’s death she went to beauty school and then operated a beauty shop in her home for 64 years.
Betty moved to Linesville in 1946 and met Clair Sowers and they married in 1947. After Clair’s death in 1988, she began to travel with her son, Lynn, and his wife, Ann, to many foreign countries.
For 25 years, she sang with the Covered Bridge Chapter of Sweet Adelines in Ashtabula. Betty was a devoted member of the Penn Line Church of Christ in Pierpont, Ohio for 90 years and was extremely active in church activities.
A wonderful cook, she was famous for her homemade apple sauce, sugar cookies and Alabama cake. Betty was a devoted mother, grandmother and great-grandmother and cherished spending time with her family.
Survivors include her son Lynn L. (Ann) Marcy of Dublin, Ohio; a grandson, Stuart Marcy of London, England; a granddaughter, Brooke (Mari) Marcy of Orange Village, Ohio; three great-grandchildren, Caleb, Laura and Edward Marcy; three step-grandchildren, Neal (Julie) Denton, Alan (Celeste) Denton, and Karyn Baldassari; seven step-great-grandchildren, Tatum, Elizabeth, Hailey, Alyssa, Grace, and Willa Denton and Adam Baldassari; a sister-in-law, Chesla Hall; and Betty had a very special place in her heart for many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; two husbands; and four siblings, Marion Hall, Ruth Usher, Bill Hall and Jerry Hall.
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, April 28, 2018 at the Penn Line Church of Christ, 6968 U.S. Route 6, Pierpont, Ohio with Pastor Ron Welker officiating. The family will receive friends at the church from 9 a.m. until the time of the service.
Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery in Pierpont Township.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Betty’s memory to the Penn Line Church of Christ, 6968 State Route 6, Pierpont, OH 44082 or the Cincinnati Christian University, Advancement Department, 2700 Glenway Ave., Cincinnati, OH 45204.
Arrangements are under the direction of the Royal-Coleman Funeral Home, 6028 U.S. Hwy 6, Linesville.
