Charles (Chuck) M. Mathers Jr., 73, of Linesville, passed away on Wednesday, August 24, 2016, at his residence, after a lengthy battle against Heart Disease and Vascular Parkinson’s.
Born September 23, 1942, in Washington D.C., he was the son of Charles and Eleanor Austin Mathers. He married Karen Dunlap on February 2, 1980 in Maryland.
Chuck graduated from Richard Montgomery High School in 1960. He then served our country in the United States Army 101st Airborne Division during the Vietnam War. After discharge he was employed as a career Firefighter for the Bethesda Fire Department in Bethesda, MD.
In his early career, he served as President of Ironworkers Local 201 in Washington D.C. Chuck later went on to build one of the largest reinforcing steel contracting businesses in the United States. He was an expert in his profession and recognized for building many bridges, highways, hospitals, hotels and subways across the United States, Puerto Rico and Canada.
He was a lifetime member of the American Legion and a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. Chuck lived to fill others' lives with happiness and joy. He opened his heart and home to family, friends, and strangers. He will always be remembered for his big heart, booming voice, and unconditional love for every living creature. He lived for his family and was quick to tell others of how proud he was of each one of them and how much he loved them.
Chuck’s favorite hobbies were golfing, boating, traveling and he filled his life with many cats and dogs. He was the life of the party and loved having gatherings. Spending time with family and friends was what he lived for.
Survivors include his loving wife of 36 years, Karen Mathers; four children, Colleen Lewis of Kansas, David Mathers of California, Julie Mathers of Maryland and Victoria Volk and her husband, Michael, of Maryland; nine grandchildren, Allison, Aubrey, Angel, Ana, Alexandria, Sofia, Sadie, Wilhelmina and Maya; a great-granddaughter, Sawyer; a sister, Dorothy Blandford and her husband, Richard, of North Carolina; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Cynthia Mathers and Marsha Ricketts; and a brother, Steven Mathers.
A celebration of his life will be held Saturday at noon at the Linesville Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 7842, 6913 Gehrton Rd., Linesville, PA.
