Eugene William Hays, 79, of Linesville, passed away Thursday, November 15, 2012, at Edinboro Manor.

Eugene is the second of eight children; he was born in Whitaker, near Pittsburgh, PA on February 18, 1933, to Murrell and Margaret Hays.  When he was eight, the family moved to Linesville, PA.

He graduated from the Sacred Heart Missions Seminary high school in 1951.  In 1957, he graduated from Allegheny College with a BS in Biology.  Eugene was in the US Army from 1957 to 1959 stationed in Schweinfort, Germany.

In 1960, he began his teaching career in high school Biology and English in the Cleveland, OH schools for approximately thirteen years until 1973.  He graduated from John Carroll University in 1970 with a Masters in English.

In 1976, he began working at Ohio Rubber as a production worker, and he became active helping with the union benefits sand Union Steward.  At Ohio Rubber, he was given a new career in Human Resources as personnel manager and he stayed until 1989.

In 1990, Eugene moved to Gulfport, FL and worked for the Home Shopping Network as a customer service representative (1990-1995).  In 1996, Eugene retired and moved back to Linesville, PA and started working for Wal-Mart until he had become ill.

Over the last 30 years, Eugene has donated many hours to St. Phillips Roman Catholic Church as Catechism instructor, choir member and organist and eventually a Bingo caller. Recently, he was a Eucharistic Minister and assisted in Mass.  He was a fourth degree Knights of Columbus.

He has been devoted to his family especially his brothers and sisters and his 23 nephews and three nieces; four great nephews, seven great nieces; one great great nephew and two great great nieces. He has helped each one in many ways.

Eugene has a large circle of friends, neighbors, and colleagues who have benefited from his generosity, open heart, and readiness to help others.

He is survived by his brothers; Murrell Jerome of Gulfport, FL, William of Eastlake, OH, Timothy of Littleton, MA, and Terrence of Frisco, TX, and his younger sister Patricia McCallum (nee Hays) of Raleigh, NC.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Murrell H. and Margaret I., and two sisters, Shirley M. Hoogstad and Joann Mosier.

A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10 a.m. Saturday, April 6, 2013 at St. Philip Roman Catholic Church, 401 S. Mercer St., Linesville.

A committal service and inurnment with full military honors provided by the Huidekoper Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2006 will follow in Our Lady Queen of the Americas Cemetery in Conneaut Lake.

A reception and gathering will follow after the committal at St. Philip Parish Center in Linesville.

Arrangements are under the direction of Royal-Coleman Funeral Home, 6028 U.S. Highway 6, Linesville.
