Harry E. McGrath, 80, of Harmonsburg, Pa passed away on Saturday, August 27, 2022, after a long battle with a lung disease, pulmonary fibrosis.
Harry was born on July 21, 1942 in Greenville, Pa. He was the son of Paul R. and Bernice (Snow) McGrath. On October 29, 1977, he married the love of his life, Mavelyn ‘Mav’ (Moffett) Clark, at their home on Route 18 north of Harmonsburg. Mavelyn preceded Harry in death on December 15, 2018 after 41 years of marriage.
Harry was a 1960 graduate of Linesville-Conneaut-Summit High School. Upon graduation he worked at American Viscose prior to becoming the owner/operator of the Harmonsburg Quaker State from the mid-60s until 1973. Harry was elected Summit Township Supervisor in 1972 serving until 1986. He was re-elected in 1992 and served until his retirement in 2014 after proudly serving the citizens of Summit Township for 36 years. He also worked for Laird Oil and Gas between 1988 and 1990.
Working with Mav on their flower beds and yard brought him great joy and he loved their frequent trips to Florida. Harry was a skilled craftsman who loved woodworking and mechanics. He built many things for his grandchildren and great grandchildren throughout the years. He also enjoyed the time spent rebuilding a 1949 Ford pickup truck with his grandson Danny, who was like a son. Harry could not wait for hunting season to spend time hunting with his sons and grandsons whom all share many great memories.
Harry is survived by 2 daughters; Dianne Mattera of Meadville and Susan Leach and her husband, Don, of Titusville, 3 sons; Norman (Norm, Paul, Ned), Thomas and his wife, Lisa, and Kevin and his wife, Sherry, all of Linesville, 13 grandchildren; Daniel Jesse and wife, Katherine, of Roaming Shores, Ohio, Teresa Jesse and fiancé, Eric, of Linesville, Courtney Kearns of Meadville, Summer Blackford and husband, Thomas, of Arizona, Bryan McGrath and wife, Kristine, of Linesville, Nicole McGrath and companion, Mathew Greeley, of Linesville, Thomas (Tucker) McGrath of Linesville, Jesse McGrath of Linesville, Luanne McGrath and companion, Dan Murdock, of Meadville, Jon Smith and fiancé, Lexus, of Conneautville, Kodie Rearick and husband, John, of Ford City, Jeremy McGrath and wife, Geneva, of Linesville, Joseph McGrath and wife, Heather, of Linesville, and 24 great-grandchildren.
Harry is also survived by a brother, Howard Phyllis and wife, Donna, of Espyville, 2 sisters; Elizabeth (Betty) Garlick and Rosalie Merchant both of Linesville, a sister-in-law Evelyn Smith of Littles Corners, 2 special nieces; Cindy Robinson and Peggy Rozalski both of Linesville, and his two pets; Grace, his miniature schnauzer, and Oscar, his adopted stray cat. Harry’s neighbors, Kim and Joel Swope, were counted among his closest friends and were always there to help him and Mav. On their many trips to Florida Harry and Mav became great friends with Kent and Amy Stoll of Indiana and Burt and Tootie Thomas of Florida.
Harry was preceded in death by his parents, brother Robert McGrath, niece Patti Buttice, nephew Randy McGrath, grandson Jacob Haslip, great grandson Connor Jess McGrath, and his four grandparents.
Per Harry’s request there will be no services. Inurnment will be at the convenience of the family in Evergreen Cemetery in Harmonsburg beside his wife Mavelyn.
Memorials can be made to the Summit Township Volunteer Fire Dept. or to the First Baptist Church of Linesville.
