Walter Gerald Holmes, 95, of Linesville, Pa went to be with the Lord on Monday, May 30, 2016.
Born February 4, 1921, at home in Clinton, Pa, he was the son of Marie and Walter Holmes. He married his beloved wife, Claire, on February 14, 1948, at the United Methodist Church in Linesville Pa. She preceded him in death July 17, 2012.
With his wife they owned Holmes Florist in Linesville for 28 years which was started by his father in 1921.
He was a member of the Linesville United Methodist Church. He served as treasurer of Linesville Rotary Club for 20 years. He was a life member of Linesville American Legion Post 462.
He was a veteran of World War II and served in the Pacific theatre as a Navy Aviation Radioman first class aboard a B24 earning four air medals signed by Admiral Nimitz and James Forrestal, Sec. of Navy. Also received two presidential unit citations, Asiatic Pacific and Philippines Liberator.
Survivors include two daughters, Karen Mandalas and her husband, Nick, of Butler, Pa and Debby Bullock and her husband, Rick, of Greensburg, Pa; a son Denny Holmes and his wife, Carol, of Conneautville; a brother, Jim of Windsor Mill, Md.; and a sister, Helen of Corry, Pa. Ten grandchildren; sixteen great grandchildren; and two great-great grandchildren also survive him.
Services will be private and at the convenience of the family.
Burial with full military honors will be private in Linesville Cemetery.
Arrangements are under the direction of Royal-Coleman Funeral Home, 6028 U.S. Highway 6, Linesville.
